Mike Bires: Opportunity awaits Beckett Connelly at W&J
Beaver’s Becket Connelly is headed to Washington & Jefferson.
When asked if he knows about a certain Washington & Jefferson College graduate who’s being paid $200 million over five years, Beckett Connelly said, “Yes, of course.”
Connelly, who’s finishing up his senior year at Beaver, knows all about Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner who graduated from W&J in 1981.
When Goodell attended W&J, he majored in economics. Connelly will major in business administration once he arrives at W&J for his freshman year.
Connelly, the leading scorer on Beaver’s basketball team this past season, wants to pursue a sports-oriented career. Maybe he’ll be a sports agent some day, or maybe an athletic director at a high school or college.
Just as Goodell has proven, possibilities are limitless after earning a degree from an academically renowned college such as W&J.
While working on his degree, Connelly, a 6-foot-3 forward, will play basketball for the Presidents. He’s part of the huge recruiting class of 11 recruits.
Six of those 11 played at WPIAL schools including Cornell’s Kaden DiVito and Isaiah Langston. The others are Seton La Salle’s Michael Bigley, Mount Lebanon’s Blaine Gartley and Ambridge’s Nevan Campalong.
It’s a recruiting class that includes four of the WPIAL’s top 53 scorers: DiVito, 25th, 20.8 ppg; Connelly, 45th, 18.9; Langston, 50th, 18.6; and Bigley, 53rd, 18.2.
“That’s a lot of guys who can score, but we’ll figure it out,” said Connelly, who scored 1,240 on his SAT and has a 3.5 grade point average. “All those kids who committed have a lot of potential.”
